the
roots of reggae and dancehall music have always been attributed to bob marley
and a few artistes in the history of the genre.
the
reggae trailblazer has touched down in accra for the 'ERIC DONALDSON LIVE IN
GHANA' concert.
but
delving into the life of some trailblazers of reggae music, we asked who eric
donaldson is ?
two
years after the birth of bob nesta marley, eric donaldson was born in saint
catherine - jamaica on June 11, 1947.
as a
reggae singer and songwriter, he launched his music carrier in 1964 after
recording some songs with studio one in kingston.
he was
a founding member of the vocal outfit 'west indians' with leslie burke and
hector brooks.
donaldson
has won the jamaican festival song competition six times, in 1971, 1977, 1978,
1984, 1993 and 1997 more than any other reggae artiste.
his
winning 1971 entry, "Cherry Oh Baby", launched him into the
limelight, although he had been composing and recording since 1964.
"Cherry
Oh Baby" was been covered by both the Rolling Stones and UB40 on their
1983 album.
the
riddim has remained extremely popular - over thirty cover versions have been
recorded, including an update by donaldson himself.
he has
15 albums and 13 album compilations.
in
1971 he recorded a version of the much-copied song, "The Lion Sleeps
Tonight".
donaldson
currently lives in 'kent village', jamaica where he runs the 'Cherry Oh Baby
Go-Go' bar.
scheduled
to perform on december 25, the 'ERIC DONALDSON LIVE IN GHANA' concert had to be
canceled due to flight problems.
interestingly,
all is set for the concert to roll as the reggae trailblazer has touched down
and ready to take ghanaian reggae lovers down memory lane.
so
music connosieurs and fun lovers should keep fingers crossed for the reknown
reggae trailblazer.
